The Rollins Tars led most of the way but could not hang on late in a 66-62 loss at Eckerd on Saturday. With the loss the Tars drop to 8-8 and 2-6 in the SSC. Eckerd improved to 12-3 and 5-2 in the SSC with the victory.
Rollins had three players score in double figures in the defeat. Connor McKim and Jakobi Bonner each scored 13- while Eric Castaneda added 12. The Tars shot 47 percent for the game and 36 percent (8-22) from the 3-point line. They hurt themselves at the free throw line where they shot 50 percent (4-8.) The Tars had 11 assists and 12 turnovers.
The Tritons were led by Marco Behori and Gianni Dailey who scored 15 points each- while Drushaun McLaurn added 10 points- six rebounds- and- four assists. Eckerd shot 42 percent as a team- 31 percent (9-29) from the 3-point line- and- 72 percent (13-18) at the free throw line. The Tritons won the rebounding battle 34-29. They had 17 assists and 11 turnovers in the contest.
The Tars would get a McKim three pointer six minutes into the game that gave them a 10-8 lead. The teams traded basket for the next several minutes and it would be knotted at 19 with 9:20 in the half. Rollins would then go on a 10-3 run to give them a 29-22 lead with 5:38 left in the half. The Tars would take a four point lead (38-34) into the intermission.
Rollins would stretch the lead to 11 (49-38) with 14:38 to go. The Tars then went cold and the Tritons went on a 7-0 run to get to within four (49-45.) The Tars led by five (57-52) after a Castaneda layup with under six minutes to go. Rollins would have another four minute drought as Eckerd would go on a 9-0 run to go up 61-57 with under two minutes to go. After a Castaneda 3-ball it was a 64-62 Tars deficit with 15 seconds to go. A Rollins turnover and a pair of free throws would seal the Eckerd vicotry that was the Tars fourth straight loss.
