The Rollins Tars came up with a big upset over #22 Florida Southern with a 83-69 win over the Mocs at Warden Arena Saturday. With the win the Tars improve to 9-8 and 3-6 in the SSC. With the loss the Mocs fall to 13-4 and 6-3 in the SSC.
Four of the five Rollins starters scored in double figures in the win. Connor McKim paced the Tars with 17 points and six assists- Jakobi Bonner and Hutton Yenor each had 15. While both Daniel Loh and Eric Castaneda scored 11. Rollins shot 46 percent as a team- 40 percent (10-25) from the 3-point line- and- 88 percent (21-24) at the free throw line. Rollins won the rebounding battle 37-34. They had 16 assists and nine turnovers.
The Mocs were led by 20 points from Ben Marello- while Brett Hanson had 17- and- Slinky Jones added 13. The Mocs shot 45 percent from the field- 26 percent (6-23) from the 3-point line- and- 64 percent (7-11) from the free throw line. They had 17 assists and 13 turnovers as a team.
Rollins got off to a quick start and used a 12-0 run to lead 15-3 five minutes in. Southern came back and cut the lead to three (26-23) with 7:44 in the first half. The Tars would stretch the lead to six (39-33) at the intermission.
The Mocs would get off to a quick start in the second half and would take a one point lead (47-46.) Rollins would counter and have a 10 point lead (71-61) with 4:33 to go. The Mocs would get to within six but the Tars would close it out with McKim scoring eight of the last 12 points- while they only allowed one field goal in the final 4:30 minutes.
