Anthony Gamble scored 38 points behind 10 3-pointer's on the night- as the Tampa Spartans outlasted the Rollins Tars 95-88 at Warden Arena Wednesday. The Spartans improved to 12-12 overall and 6-10 in the SSC with the win. Rollins fell to 9-15 and 3-13 in the SSC with there seventh straight defeat.
Eric Castaneda drained six 3-pointer's on his way to 24 points in the contest- Connor McKim scored 18 points and dished out six assists- while Jakobi Bonner tallied 14. Trevor Recio chipped in 11- and- Hutton Yenor rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 in a losing effort. The Tars shot 46 percent as a team on the day- 37 percent (14-38) from the 3-point line- and- shot at a 84 percent clip (16-19) from the free throw line. The Tars had 18 assists and 11 turnovers in the contest for the game.
Gamble led the Spartans with 38 points- Freddy Ibrahim knocked down four 3-pointer's on his way to 23 points- while Alberto Moreno knocked down three triples on his way to 15 points. The hot shooting Spartans shot 56 percent as a team from the field- 53 percent (18-34) from the 3-point line- and- 74 percent (17-23) from the free throw line. The Spartans won the rebounding battle 34-29. They had 26 assists and 17 turnovers as they completed the season sweep of the Tars.
Gamble would give a preview of how most of the night would go 12 seconds into the contest when he buried his first of 10 3-pointer's. It would be Rollins that would get out to a seven point lead (12-5) nearly six minutes in. After a Devon Colley 3-pointer capped a 11-2 run the Spartans would have a 16-14 advantage halfway thru the opening half. The lead would be stretched to 11 (31-20) after another Gamble 3-ball with 4:33 in the opening half. McKim would briefly get the lead to within single digits after a three of his own but it would be a 15 point lead (49-34) for Tampa at the intermission.
Gamble would lead Tampa with 19- and- Ibrahim had 14 in the opening 20 minutes. The Spartans shoot 55 percent from the field- as well as 55 percent (12-22) from the 3-point line in the opening stanza. The Spartans shot 60 percent (3-5) at the free throw line. They had 16 assists and seven turnovers in the half. They also had a 11-10 advantage on the glass in the half.
Rollins was led by 14 points from Castaneda in the opening half- while McKim added 10. They shot 43 percent as a team in the first half- 29 percent (5-17) from the 3-point line- and- were a perfect five of five at the free throw line. The Tars had eight assists and eight turnovers in the half.
Gamble would continue to deliver from long rang to put the Spartans up 21 (65-44) with 14:25 to go. The lead would still be 6 (74-58) halfway thru the second stanza. After being down 14 (77-63) with eight minutes to go on a 15-2 bust capped by a fadeaway 3-pointer by Castaneda that cut the lead to one (79-78) as the shot clock expired. All of the sudden Warden Arena had new life. A couple of empty Rollins possessions and a free throw by Marco Downer made it 80-78 with less than four and a half minutes to go. Downer would quiet the crowd with an old fashioned three-point play with 3:25 to go that made it a five point Tampa advantage. Downer would score again- but the Tars would get a Recio 3-pointer to make it 85-81 with 2:24 to go. After a Recio steal Castaneda could not convert on a 3-point attempt at the 1:58 mark. After another Rollins stop Castaneda made a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to two (85-83) with 1:36 to go. Gamble would make a jumper and then Bonner would get to the rim for a bucket but could not convert the old fashioned three-point play as it would be 87-85 with 1:02 to go. A pair of Moreno free throws would make it 89-85. McKim would split a pair of free throws- and- then Ibrahim would split a pair of his own. A McKim layup with 25 seconds left would get the Tars within two one last time (90-88.) Gamble and Moreno would close the victory out at the free throw line for the Spartans.
