Sam Philpott scored 18 points and had a big day for the Rollins Tars Saturday, but the story of the day was a pair of Tampa Jesuit products Joey Galvis and Jack Fleming coming thru in their own backyard. The result was a 88-69 win for Rollins that was the fourth straight victory for the Tars. This one at the Bob Martinez Center.
Rollins (17-10 11-6 SSC) had five players score in double figures and nine players get in the scoring column in this one. Philpott led the way with 18- Eric Castaneda scored 14- Joey Galvis had a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. He also added three steals to his conference leading total- while Jack Fleming had 13- and- Connor McKim added 10 points and six assists.
Rollins shot 57 percent in the game- including a scorching hot (20 of 28 for 71 percent in the second half.) The Tars shot 15-28 (54 percent) from the 3-point line, including 64 percent (7-11) in the second half. They shot 73 percent (11-15) at the free throw line- had 19 assists and nine turnovers as a team.
Tampa (16-10 9-7 SSC) was led by Marcel Robinson with 14 points- Anthony Gamble chipped in 12- and- they got 11 each from Duke Shelton and Pat Bacon. The Spartans shot 46 percent as a team- they were 9-33 (27 percent) from the 3-point line- 67 percent (6 of 9 at the free throw line-) and won the rebounding battle 31-26. They had 17 assists and 15 turnovers as a team.
Tampa scored the game's first four points before McKim and Jeff Merton connected from the 3-point line to give the Tars the lead. The Spartans tied the game at 11 after a Robinson dunk at the 12:59 mark of the opening half. The game would be knotted at 17 before McKim gave Rollins the lead with a pair of free throws at the 8:09 mark of the half. The Spartans would take a brief lead but a 3-ball by Fleming would give Rollins a two point lead (22-20) at the 7:19 mark. Gamble would hit back to back 3-pointer's to give Tampa the lead 29-26 before Fleming connected with another 3-pointer to tie it. Rollins would score the next six points after Tampa tied it and take a five point lead (36-31) at halftime.
The Spartans would get to within three a couple times early in the second half but the Tars would stretch the lead to eight (52-44) on a Galvis 3-pointer with 14:34 to go. Tampa would get to within six (54-48) on a Matt Johnson free throw with 12:47 to go. Philpott would go on a 10-0 run by himself as the Tars would go up 16 (64-48) with 9:10 to go. The Tars would lead by as many as 22 and cruise to the victory.
Rollins will be back in action Saturday when they face Saint Leo to close out the regular season .Tip time is set for 4 PM.
