A Joey Galvis put back with two seconds left gave Rollins the lead and a stunning 90-85 win over #17 Barry Wednesday night at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center. Rollins rallied from 15 points down early in the second half to improve to 16-10 overall and 10-6 in the SSC. With the loss Barry dropped to 19-5 and 12-5 in the SSC.
Rollins had four players score in double figures on the night. Jeff Merton led the way with 22 points- Sam Philpott netted 18- Galvis scored 17, as well as six steals and four assists- while Eric Castaneda provided 13 off the bench.
The Tars shot 58 percent on the evening- went 10-19 (53 percent) from the 3-point line- and shot 57 percent (8-14) at the free throw line. The Tars had twice as many assists (19) as turnovers (nine-) they also added 10 steals in the game.
Barry dropped a third straight. They were paced by Arie Williams who knocked down eight 3-pointer's en route to his 24 points- Adrian Gonzalez added 20- while Kenan Guzonjic scored 15- and- Sawyer Glick chipped in four 3-pointer's en route to his 14 points.
The Bucs shot 50 percent from the field- 47 percent (16-34) from the 3-point line- and- 83 percent (5-6) at the free throw line. The Bucs won the rebounding battle 35-26. They had 25 assists and 14 turnovers as a team.
The Tars scored the first five points to start the contest- only to see the Bucs come back and score the next nine to take a 9-5 early lead. Barry would stretch that lead to eight (35-27) after a Daniel Mortensen 3-pointer with just over seven minutes left in the opening half. Rollins would have an answer though, they would eventually regain the lead (40-39) after a Galvis 3-pointer at the 2:02 mark of the half. Mike Bedulskis would stretch the lead to three (42-39) before Elvar Fridriksson would knot the game at 42 with a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer.
The Bucs would come out red hot in the second half after the teams would trade baskets on the opening possession of the half. It would be a 20-5 run that would give the Bucs their largest lead of the game (64-49) with 13:31 to go. The Tars would respond though and score the next seven points in the next 1:05 to cut the lead to eight (64-56) after a Merton 3-pointer. The lead would grow to 10 once before the Tars would have a quick answer. At the 6:32 Rollins got to within four (78-74) on a Galvis hoop. The Tars would continue to trail until they knotted the game at 85 on a Castaneda layup at the 1:06 mark. On the ensuing possession the Tars would get a blocked shot and Castaneda made a "heady play" when he did not go after the ball knowing the shot clock was about to expire. So the Tars had the ball with the game tied and 32 seconds to go. Tom Klusman called timeout and drew up a set play out of bounds. Connor McKim would drive to the left and miss the shot but Galvis got the offensive rebound and put back what proved to be the game winner. On the last Barry possession Fridriksson was called for an offensive foul much to the dismay of Barry coach Butch Estes who was given two technicals and ejected from the game. McKim made three of the four free throws with .7 seconds to go and the Tars had a huge upset.
Rollins will be back in action for another big one Saturday at the Bob Martinez Center when they battle the Tampa Spartans. Tip time is set for 4 PM.
