The Rollins Tars welcome an old nemesis to Warden Arena Wednesday when the Tampa Spartans come to town. Richard Schmidt has won 692 games and is ninth in all of Division II in wins as the head coach of Tampa for the past 37 seasons. The Tars (9-5 5-3 SSC) are coming off a big 80-68 win over upstart Nova Southeastern. With the win the Tars snapped a four game losing slide. Sam Philpott scored 21 points to lead Rollins in the victory- Jack Fleming netted 15- while Connor McKim chipped in 14. Philpott leads the Tars in scoring and is seventh in the SSC putting up 19.8 points a game. Jeff Merton adds 14.4 a contest- while Deion Clark puts up 12.6 points and 4.5 rebounds a night. Two other Rollins players average double figures as Eric Castaneda (12.3 points per game- 4.5 rebounds a game- and- Connor McKim (10.9 ppg and 4.3 assists per night) have also had solid seasons thus far. The Tars average 82.3 points per game- while they give up 80.8 points per night. Those are both good for seventh in the SSC.
Tampa (7-6 3-4 SSC) comes in on a three game win streak. The Spartans were a 90-77 winner over Palm Beach Atlantic last time out. Duke Shelton scored 29 points- and- Anthony Gamble added 22 in this one. Pat Bacon (15-) and- Marcel Robinson (10) were also in double figures. Bacon averages a team leading and league fourth best 21.4 points per game. Shelton averages a double- double (14 points and is second in the nation with 12.4 rebounds a game. Robison adds 14.4 per contest. The Spartans score 81.8 points per game- and- give up 81 per contest. Both of those are good for eighth in the SSC.
The two teams split a pair of meetings last season, The Spartans won 81-73 in Winter Park. While the Tars were a 88-69 winner at the Martinez Center. Rollins is 44-75 all time against Tampa. Jeff Merton needs 31 points to tie Curt Fiser in total points scored for a career. Jeff Merton is sixth all time in 3-pointer's made. He needs nine to pass Jonny Rebel for fifth all-time. Philpott needs 17 points to pass Scott Martin for 22nd all time in points scored.
