The Rollins College Tars 13-4 (5-1 SSC) won for the fourth straight time Wednesday at Warden Arena. It was a 75-61 win over Florida Tech 12-8 (2-4 SSC).
The Tars with the win, coupled with a Tampa loss to Florida Southern forged a three way tie atop the SSC standings at 5-1. Nick Wolf led a pair of Tars in double figures. Wolf had a double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Matt Robertson added 17 points and 8 rebounds for Rollins. Brett Chance and Alex Castillo continued their stellar play of late off the bench. Chance had 8 points on 3 of 5 shooting. Castillo added 7 points on 3 for 4 from the floor and also had 3 assists. The Tars shot 48% from the field on the night. They were 8-20 (40%) from long range. The Tars continued a solid season of shooting at the charity stripe going 17 of 20 (85%). Each team pulled down 29 rebounds. The Tars had 12 turnovers and 15 assists as a team. The Tars also added 8 steals. With the win Rollins improved to 9-1 at home on the season.
The Panthers had a modest two game win streak snapped. SSC leading scorer Justin Sedlak scored a game high 30 points. He was the only Panther in double figures. Derek Helleman and Anthony Jackson netted 7 points each. The Panthers shot 42% from the floor in the game. They struggled from beyond the arc going 4 of 14. FIT shot 17-22 (77%) from the free throw line. The Panthers had only 8 assists to go with 17 turnovers.
FIT come out with the early energy and took a 10-4 lead in the early going. The Tars would then go on a 18-4 run to take a 22-14 lead on a Chris Malcolm jumper with 6:33 in the first half. The Tars would stretch that lead out to 14 (34-20) on a Nikola Baran backdoor lay up at the first half buzzer.
Sedlak would single handedly keep the Panthers in the game in the second half. A Sedlak three with 14:53 to go would cut the lead to 8 at 44-36. Wolf would answer the Sedlak three with one of his own. The Tars would then stretch the lead back out to 56-40 on a Castillo layup with 11:23 to go. The Panthers would get no closer than 14 the rest of the way,
The Tars will be back in action Saturday. The Mocs of Florida Southern (13-4) will be at Warden Arena for a battle of first place teams. Tip time is set for 4 PM and you can catch all the action on www.RollinsSports.TV
