The Rollins College Tars fell to 14-7 on the year and 7-4 in the SSC with a 71-57 loss at the McArthur Center Saturday.
Rollins dug themselves a huge hole in the first half. After going nearly 12 minutes in the opening frame without a field goal Rollins fell behind 32-10 at the half. The Tars would be down by 30 with 16 minutes to go before they started a furious come back attempt. The Tars would get within nine with 6:17 to go but that is as close as they would get. Jeremy Sharpe led the Tars in scoring for the third straight game. Sharpe scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half. Myk Brown also scored in double digits with 15, while Chris Malcolm netted nine in the loss. The Tars shot 35 percent for the game, including a dismal 3 of 25 in the opening half. Rollins went 5-23 from the 3-point line (0-11 in the opening half). The Tars made 82 percent from the free throw line. The Tars had eight assists as opposed to 16 turnovers.
The Tritons win coupled with a Florida Tech loss at Saint Leo gives the Tritons sole possession of first place in the SSC with a 8-3 record (15-5 overall). The win completed a season sweep of the Tars for Eckerd (the other being an OT win in January at Rollins.) Four Tritons scored in double figures in the win Saturday. Darrien Mack led the way with 21 points for EC, Wayne Sears Jr. added 12. Woody Taylor netted 11 and Josh Snodgrass netted 10 for the Tritons. Eckerd stayed perfect in the SSC at home with the win. The Tritons shot 46 percent from the field and hit 5-17 (29 percent) from the 3-point line. The Tritons hit 71 percent from the free throw line (20-28). They edged the Tars on the glass 35-34. The Tritons had 10 assists to go along with 10 turnovers.
Rollins will get the evening off on Wednesday. They will look to bounce back Saturday when Saint Leo comes to Warden Arena. Tip time is set for 4 PM. You can catch all the action on RollinsSports.com and on 91.5 FM WPRK Winter Park.
