The Rollins Tars (7-8 0-4 SSC) look to collect a win in conference play for the first time in the 2014-15 season when they head to St.Pete to battle the Eckerd Tritons (8-6 2-3 SSC) Saturday. Both teams come into Saturday's contest on a three game losing slide.
For the Tars they have been agonizingly close to a conference win the last two times out but have ultimately fallen short. The 0-4 start for the Tars in the SSC is the worst start to conference they have had since the 1982-83 campaign. As always the game will be broadcast on the Geico Tars Sports Network on RollinsSports.com and locally on 91.5 FM WPRK in Winter Park.
The last time out for Rollins was a 55-53 loss to Nova Southeastern. After falling behind by 12 (51-39) with three minutes to go and by six with 24 seconds left the Tars had a chance to win it late but a Kyle Koszuta 3-point attempt would not fall. Alex Blessig was the only Tar in double figures with 18 points- while Chris Uhle chipped in eight.
Blessig leads the Tars on the season averaging 11.5 points per game. That is good enough for 17th in the conference. Blessig is fifth in the league in assists at four per game and also sits fifth in the league in steals at 2.3 per night. Uhle has had a solid senior season. The big man from Ocala is scoring 10.4 points a contest- he has been deadly from the 3-point line where his 34 3-pointer's made is best in the conference. Uhle is also seventh in the SSC in 3-point percentage (43.6 percent on the year.) He is also second in the conference in blocked shots with 35 on the season. The Tars still sit second in the SSC in scoring defense. They only give up 65.3 points a game. On the other end they are near the bottom of the league averaging just 68.5 points per game.
The Tritons, like the Tars are coming in struggling a bit. Eckerd has dropped the last three contests. The last time out was a 80-62 loss to sixth ranked Florida Southern on Wednesday. Ray Darnell was the only Eckerd player in double digits in that game with 11 points- Keshawn Ingram and EJ Moody added nine and eight points respectively.
Jerrick Stevenson has stuffed the stat sheet for Eckerd this year. He is putting up 14 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. Moody is the only other Triton averaging double figures at 10.9 a night. Malcolm Bruner Jr. leads the team in rebounding at 6.6 a night- to go along with his 9.3 points. The Tritons are in the middle of the pack in both offense and defense for the season. They average 73.1 points a game on the offensive end- while on the defensive side of the ball they give up 71.4 per contest.
The Tars won both meetings with Eckerd last season.
