The Barry Buccaneers (9-1 2-0 SSC) coming off one of the biggest wins in program history over the weekend invade Winter Park to battle the Rollins Tars (7-5 1-0 SSC.)
Barry moved up to #8 in the NABC DII coaches poll after surprising #2 Florida Southern 107-102 at Jenkins Field House in Lakeland Saturday. The loss was the first of the season for the Mocs.
The Bucs were led by Yunio Barrueta who scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Anders Haas added 18- while Deric Hill scored 15 points and dished out 12 assists.
Barrueta leads Barry averaging 18.5 points a game- he also is averaging 8.4 rebounds a contest. Haas is scoring 13.1 per night- and is almost automatic at the foul line shooting 90 percent on the year. Juan Ferrales puts up 12.6 per night. Hill dished out 7.7 assists a game- which is fourth in the country.
The high flying Barry offense comes in averaging 88.2 points a night. On the defensive end they give up 71.5. They are the leading rebounding team in the conference averaging 10.4 boards a game more than the opposition.
The Tars come in off a very solid start to the new year. They defeated Palm Beach Atlantic and Florida Memorial both in decisive fashion after a holiday break. The youngsters led the way for the Tars in Saturday's win over Florida Memorial. Jeff Merton led the way with 11 points- while Sam Philpott had a career high 10. James Ferrell had his best day as a Tar dishing out eight assists to go along with six points and a pair of steals.
Alex Blessig leads the Rollins box score at 12. 5 points a game. The junior also averages 7.1 assists- which is seventh in the SSC. Blessig is tied for the league lead in steals with 30 on the season.
Chris Uhle is third in the conference with 24 blocked shots and his 24 3-pointer's are tied for seventh in the conference. Jeff Dirkin has had a good year on the defensive end thus far. The senior is averaging 1.7 steals and 0.8 blocks a contest.
The Tars come into Wednesday putting up 71.3 points a game. On defense they are second in the league giving up just 66.2 points per game.
